My story…
After a short career in Geology and some global travelling, I returned to school to study art at Emily Carr University, Langara College and finally, the Kootenay School of the Arts, graduating from the clay studio with a focus on functional ceramics. In 2013 I received a grant from the Kootenay Columbia Cultural Alliance to expand my creative practice to include sculpture. I have been teaching classes in my studio for years to people of all ages and experience levels and am currently in the process of developing a new line of work and refining my sculptural direction.
The sensory qualities of clay…
I am attracted to the sensory qualities of clay and the potential for its poetical expression. Working intuitively, I seek to bring out the drama of the inherent qualities of the material in order to provoke emotional resonance. The sculptural work is accessible through its reference to the human body formed from the clay body, the material of creation myths. I look at and am influenced by design, art, nature, and ancient civilizations, and am getting less and less concerned about the distinction between art, craft, design and the pure pleasure of making.
